Should I Use a .22 Magnum for Self-Defense? - The Shooter's Log
.22 Magnum offers a good boost in power and accuracy compared to .22 LR, but how does this rimfire cartridge fare for self-defense use?

This is 7 rounds, weighs 10.5oz…In a lightweight snubbie with 8-rd capacity and a load that is optimized for short barrels, I would.

I used it to requalify for my carry permit, shot 100%.
Loaded with Hornady Crit Defense 40gr; I’ll also go for Winchester PDX or Gold Dots.
S&W 351C. If you prefer a hammer, the 351PD is a pretty sweet little piece as well. That one is definitely on my short list.![]()

My “covert carry” choice; also as a BUG.
I think as we get older (I turned 65 in July) and survive surgeries (Neck Micro Fracture and Quadruple Bypass) and we like to carry a concealed handgun, it's wise to find firearms that we are comfortable carrying AND can shoot accurately.![]()

The rounds designed for short barrels (CritDef, PDX, Gold Dot) are pretty low flash…it’s definitely a lot more than, say, .22LR out of my S&W 43C, but it’s not a fireball like you’ll get out of rifle-designed WMR ammo (Maxi-Mag, etc).Little recoil, loud, lots of muzzle flash; if you're a good shot your assailant will never know what caliber you used to neutralize the threat. Then there's that rhetorical question that always comes to mind in this type of discussion: What caliber would any intelligent person really want to be shot with?
