XDM Elite Cleaning

All cleaners are pretty much the same.

All lubes are pretty much the same.

If you want a combo, Breakfree CLP is probably the way to go.

As far as how often? Some people insist that they must clean after every range session, while others have no problems cleaning every 100, 200, 500 or more rounds.

Thanks HG. CLP seems like the way to go. Though if I wanted to go the cleaner and lubricant separately are there any you recommend?

I use Mobil 1 10w20 for lube oil, mostly. Otherwise, like I said, they’re all pretty much the same. Same for cleaners, until you get into the serious bore cleaners for rifles...I’ve got CLP, Hoppes #9, Gunslick foaming...they all do the job.

There is really no dedicated or set time to clean a pistol. Some will clean 100 rounds some will clean 500 and some will clean after every range session even if it was one mag. If your going to store it after you shoot it, if clean and oil it. Shoot a couple hundred rounds clean it.

As far as cleaners and lubricants, there is no special one out there. Go with what you prefer or like. I prefer Brakfree CLP, Mpro7, the cleaner and their oil and I also like FP-10.

Having said all that I am very meticulous about my firearms and I also don’t mind and enjoy cleaning them. If I shoot 50 rounds, I am liable to clean my pistol.

I to am like BangBang on cleaning, every time I shoot it, I will clean it, only thing I will say though, is to make sure the cleaning products are polymer safe, do not use Gunscubber, brake clean and such on polymer guns, I have seen many fine guns ruined by these products when I worked at my sheriff Dept.

I’ll toss in with the Gunscrubber issue. It’s definitely not for poly parts i.e. the frame. But for the slide, it works wonders for getting down into the striker channel. Just keep the frame away from the cleaning area while your using the spray.
And make sure you follow the manual’s instructions on where and how much to use. Oil in places it shouldn’t be makes click but no boom. And a delayed boom is hella dangerous.

I've had good results with OTIS 085 CLP for most cleaning. The exception being the barrel bore and feed ramp, which get Hoppes #9 and some patches prior to CLP. I use gun oil in a needle applicator for sliding contacts.

I clean after every range trip, regardless of round count. If it gets fired, it gets cleaned. Much like your home, I find it is easier to do frequent light cleaning than it is to do infrequent heavy cleaning.

Slip Carbon Cutter for cleaning & Slip 2000 for lube.

I went 5,000 rds with my 5.25 Competition in 2 seasons IPSC shooting as a stress test and it kept running. Finally cleaned it when I decided I'd seen enough.

Love to hear it survived this type of test. I’ve only put it through about 100 rounds in 3 separate sessions. I definitely plan to clean it before the next session, but good to know it will take a lot of rounds and keep on firing

Here’s a secret:

Most modern firearms are pretty robust when it comes to functioning under adverse conditions.

For example—I bought a cheap, used (police trade in) Gen2 Glock 21 about 10-15 years ago. It was pretty dirty when I bought it, and I decided that I was going to see how much abuse it would take...so I didn’t clean it or lube it.

I only shot cheap Russki steel cased ammo through it (known for being “dirty” ammo). After several thousand rounds, it started getting sluggish in feeding...so I stripped the slide, and powder residue was literally CAKED inside the slide and frame...so I tapped both on the shooting bench, knocking out the worst of the crud, put a couple drops of lube on the barrel hood & rails, and started shooting the snot out of it again, issues solved.

I ran it to, I recall, at about 5k rounds when I sold it to a buddy’s son who was looking for an inexpensive HD pistol...detail stripped it, put it in a parts washer, let it rattle around for a while, came out clean...it’s running to this day.

So...5k rounds isn’t magic.

When I did my test I was running clean burning ammo thru it. If one runs dirty ammo there could be differences.

I've found that Russian Tula & Wolf to run dirty, as well as being under powered.

When I buy a new edc I run it till it acts up or I get tired of it spitting carbon on me, usually around 1k for strikers, before I’ll carry it. I cleaned my current XDM Compact around 1200 and the rails were almost pristine. Once I started cleaning it every range trip, I started seeing the usual wear. I’m not saying don’t clean your guns but carbon buildup makes a great buffer between metals 😁

I clean them. I like cleaning them and I like it when they’re clean so it’s a win win.

Like Hans said, Breakfree CLP is pretty good stuff. I use it a lot. On strikers you want to be careful not to get it all up in the striker channel. And I still usually put a tiny amount of grease on the rails and a drop of oil on the 4 or 5 manufacturer recommended spots.

I like Seal 1 for a really dirty gun like Hans’ old Glock up there. Make sure you wipe all that crap off though. You don’t want to leave it on there. It’s not a lube.
