    Vigilantes in Louisiana

Interesting story, many questions. Were the robbers armed before they took the store clerk's gun? Why didn't the customers wait for the police? If the thugs were leaving, was it justified to shoot?

    10 guns not going anywhere

I have no idea what firearms may be in 100 years. Obviously won't be around to find out. Those are classic guns. I think Glocks will be around longer than cockroaches.

New shoes for an old girl

I have used metallic orange fingernail polish on front sights. If there is not already a white background, I put on a white base coat.

    Springfield Trapdoor

I'm tending to agree with you and Recusant that you have an infantry rifle modified to resemble carbine configuration, i.e., a cobbled gun. The rifles had screws in the same place as those for the ring bar on carbines. When I started my work as a firearms historian for our museum, I was...

    Springfield Trapdoor

Thank you for that information. Again, no expert here. Carbines were issued to calvary units without under-barrel rods, so unusual that your firearm has the groove and latch. Probably should have the holes in the butt for the three piece rod. In the Little Bighorn fight at Reno Hill, one...

    Springfield Trapdoor

I'm not a Trapdoor expert, but have researched several of them recently for the museum where I volunteer. You mention "all the proper markings." I assume the lock has US over Springfield with a spread winged eagle and 1884. Proof marks on the barrel. US/MODEL/1884 on the front of breech...

On A Serious Note for Your Health

I lost a good friend to colon cancer because he refused to be scoped. Get checked. Although at my age, 79, the doc tells me I may not need another one. Same with PSA check for the prostate.

    XD 9 help needed

Better than electrical tape is a piece of bicycle inner tube on the grip. For me, it enhances grip stability. Some will note that disabling any safety device on a firearm may create a problem in court if the gun is used in a self defense shooting.

    Gear-up bag Bait and Switch?

I purchased a Hellcat Pro from an online vendor under the Gear Up promotion about 8 months ago. Came with the "range bag," folio, and five magazines. I'm happy with everything I received.

    Springfield 1880 hunting knife

Correct about the wooden handle on the trowel bayonet. It's not attached so often missing from surviving specimens. The handle also gave a more comfortable grip in use. Soldiers were expressly forbidden from using the bayonet for digging while attached to the rifle but you know some did...

    Springfield 1880 hunting knife

The 1880 knives with brass bolsters are more common than the first 1000 with iron. The sheath is missing the belt attachment which hurt the value. The blades were thin and somewhat fragile if used as an entrenching tool.

Do You Really need a .357 Magnum for Self Defense?

No. There are better options in my opinion.

    Model 1888 Springfield Trapdoor

I find information about foil cartridges for Colt revolvers and the .577 Snider. Do you have a reference I can cite for use of foil cartridges in Trapdoors? Note that I do not currently own a Trapdoor. I am the firearms historian for a museum so am always anxious to learn more about the guns...

The official Cretin and Curmudgeon good morning and BS'n thread.

These four types of venomous snakes in the United States are rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, and coral snakes. What is your fifth variety? Not trying to start an argument, just curious. There are multiple sub species in each category.

    Model 1888 Springfield Trapdoor

Great information, thank you. Had no idea about the various sight protectors. I thought the early .45-70 cartridges were copper which does not obdurate and reform after firing as does brass? Not familiar with foil. I appreciate your knowledge and am not trying to start an argument, just...

Throwback Thursday: A Look at the Colt Series 70

Lots of evidence of 19th Century Colt ads calling their revolvers "pistols." What do you call a handgun with more or less than 6 rotatibg (?) chambers?

    Model 1888 Springfield Trapdoor

The Model 1888 I'm evaluating has a Model 1879 combination tool in the stock recess under the butt plate door. What is the tool in your picture? I'm sure you know that the lower sling swivel should be attached to the front of the trigger guard. Again, I'm no expert on Trapdoors, but I think...
