10mm vs .45 ACP for Self-Defense

Someone needs to call them and let them know it is the 21st century and there are newer rifles out by now.
For polar conditions, it’s hard to beat a bolt action for sheer reliability; particularly one that’s controlled-round feed, not push-feed.

I’ve got a Winchester M1917 that’ll run with most off the shelf bolt actions under $1k, easy. Much stronger action than a 700 or 110 to boot.

The .45ACP in a strong, M1911* format can be safely handloaded with 185g bullets to velocities within ~200 fps of the 10mm (in .45ACP, 1,050-1,100 fps. That is close enough with a still-heavy bullet to make the 10mm leap one not worth taking. I've verified by a Doppler chronometer that the velocities claimed are met.
*Forty years ago I started handloading precisely because HP ammo was rare & my carry was a Star PD, a lightweight, single-locking lug 1911 design (in addition to Colt 1911). The hotter load was hard on the Star fiber recoil bushings, but they sent me a bunch of them at no charge.

I do not disagree but there is still the matter of eight rounds of .45 vs. 16 rounds of 10mm. As much as I like a 1911 in .45 ACP, If the SHTF I am probably going with 10mm. Just as back in the 80's I liked .41 mag for it's power and accuracy; the 10mm is pretty darn close but with a whole lot more rounds to send out there. But then, I also like to shoot this HK in .45 ACP, but at least it has 12 rounds in the magazine. And it's nice and quiet.

Wrong. 16 vs 8 is a cherry picked comparison.

In single stack (say, 1911) the comparison would be 8rd .45 vs 9rd 10mm. In double stack—say a G21 vs G20, it’s 13 vs 15.

That’s if you actually want to make an honest comparison, that is.

Nice USP Tactical, though. I’ve had one since they dropped, and it’s by far the most accurate plastic .45 I’ve ever handled.

per HG's comment - that is exactly why I have both of those - 2 rounds difference, identical size and handling. A little more punch in the 10 but since I only use +P in the 45 it's not that much - about 150ish ft lbs and similar fps.

If one is using the handgun for military or LE applications, the mag capacity MIGHT mean something...in DGU scenarios it is meaningless. Almost all examples of DGU are limited to 2-3 rounds. If I felt I might actually need more magazine capacity (like on a road trip), I carry a second mag. If I believed I needed higher capacity, I'd probably not leave the house. There is also the consideration of ammo availability....45ACP is more widely available, especially for those that don't handload.
High mag capacity is really only meaningful in an actual service weapon. BTW, for those carrying a 1911, there are excellent 8 rd. mags available, plus one in chamber for 9, though a full-size 1911 is not really a CC weapon unless one is pretty massive. A short 1911, like a Kimber Ultra-Carry is 1-2 rounds less with a flush mag. If traveling, this is my choice since one can't just run home to get a wider gun if things get sketchy.

A meme is not a "reply", but many .45 guys select it for proven performance, availability, a flexibility to load up to 1,100 fps with 185g bullets and the familiarity that comes with over 50 years of personal experience, military & civilian, using the chambering. I don't know any .45 ACP users that speak ill of the 10mm, they just don't perceive a need for a niche caliber with fewer applications or sources.

I don't often carry 1911's but when I do pistol is loaded with 9 rounds of 45acp one in chamber 8 in the mag. Plus have an additional 10 round mag on my belt. Choice of 45acp ammo has for years been Fed 230 +P HST. I have a few hundred rounds of Doubletap 200 gr Speer Gold Dot ammo I'm taking a hard look at.
