I don't recall using a mat. But we did touch the rafters and some of us could do it without our legs.

When I was a Scout we had a “rope climb” at a fair at school. If you succeeded you got a tootsie pop that was in a knot at the top of the rope. My job was to replace them when somebody got one-oh, I don’t remember any mats either
