Glock 19 Killers: Best Compact Pistols That Aren’t a Glock

I'm not a gun guy. I'm not a collector, I'm not an accumulator and I'm really not looking for the next new best thing.

There was a time in my life when I thought the Third Generation Smith and Wesson was the Apex of handgun technology. To make a long story short I got a chance to do some training and I began to see some flaws in the design. The biggest being the manual safety.

I sold off all but one of my third generation Smith & Wesson and I bought an M&P 9. Compatibility between handguns is a major requirement for me. I bought an M&P9C (first generation, the one they call the subcompact now) but I never really liked the way it fit my hand.

Well I was doing my research on the M&P a really couldn't get around the fact that the Glock 19 filled both niches. So I sold the 9C and I bought one. A year later I bought a Glock26 and it turned out to be everything that I wanted thr 9C to be.

I said all that to say that those two handguns meet all the requirements that I have for a handgun. So I quit looking for the next great thing.

If you want to stick with G17/19 parts compatibility the PSA Dagger is a pretty good option, the price is really good & options are fantastic. Plus, you can build your own version by buying the different slide configurations (sights, threaded barrels & finishes) & frame colors separately.

Review:

Glock seems to be stuck in the mud when it comes to "real" upgrades/innovations vs. minor tweaks and then calling it a new Gen.

My .02
No need to change what works! That's why 1911's try to keep up!

I choose yeet over 1911 ;)

While I agree with the trigger being one of the best in a striker…the VP9 beats it in ergonomics, with the customizable grip panels.
Having owned a few VP9s in the past, I'd say that that the VP9 offers more adjustability in ergonomics, but I'm not sure the actual ergonomics themselves are superior. Both the PDP and the VP9 are really good in that regard, and better than just about anything else out there. But of course at a certain point, ergos just come down to personal preference.

The other way the PDP edges out the VP9 (imo) is in terms of price. HK tends to be very proud of their products, and I've always thought the VP9 was over-priced. It's good, but it's not $700 good (although I'm starting to see some VP9 models under $600 now). And it's getting a bit long in the tooth at this point, with only very minor updates in a decade. I'm seeing PDPs on the shelves for $530-$550 (not on sale). I don't really see anything about the VP9 in terms of build quality, accuracy, etc. that justifies it being more expensive than the PDP.

Fair enough; I haven’t played with a PDP yet, I was thinking it was a PPQ.

I do think that the OR models of the VP9 are pretty solid, though.

I'd say the PDP trigger is even a little better than the PPQ.

No doubt.

I need to get my hands on a PDP then. I have a PPQ ( Q5 Match actually) that I like a lot. The ergos are very nice. It also has an interchangeable back strap. Alas it's not really a carry pistol. It's 5", plus it has slide cuts all over which make it less than ideal. Mine also wears a Vortex Venom and I am not sold on red dots on carry pistols. Nice range toy, but frankly it doesn't get much play around here anymore. It was my first 9mm. I am, or was anyway, a .45 guy.

Then I decided I needed a 9mm for carry so I bought a straight VP9, no optic cut, paddle mag release. It's a great carry gun and I would say the ergos are slightly nicer than the Walther. Not being a huge trigger snob, the fact that the Q5 trigger is a bit better than the VP9 is a non-issue for me. I almost think the trigger on the Q5 is a little too nice for carrying. Almost no reset travel.

Of course then I went after the gun I wanted in the first place and got a P30L with the GG flat trigger and light spring. It's my primary cooler weather carry gun now. Last thing I really need is another 9mm pistol, but here we are.

Yeah, obviously the Q5 Match is in a whole different league and price range, and designed to be a competition gun, but for a carry/duty pistol, the PDP is really good. I'd say it's really a toss-up between the VP9 and the PDP, depending on what features one cares about/doesn't care about. But in the $530 price range, I haven't handled anything else that comes close (and I've handled quite a few). If the price on the VP9s came down, it would really be a toss up. I'll take either one over a Glock any day.

I hear ya about not needing another 9mm - I was just telling myself that again last week. 🤣
