Evolution of a Firearm - Angstadt Arms UDP-9 -

Since the 1980's I always wanted an H&K MP5 (HK94). It always seemed too expensive or out-of-reach.
At the end of 2019, I started looking at AR-9s. (This was before I started down the Build rabbit hole.) With Braced pistols being legal, I started looking for a quality AR9 from the factory with a 6-8" barrel that took Glock magazines. After a little research, I decided on the Angstadt Arms UDP-9 (6" barrel). It wasn't the cheapest option, but reviews were good and it seemed like a solid choice. This was going to be my "Poor man's" MP5.

In February 2020 I ordered and received one from a LGS. (Right before the Covid gun buying binge.) In the back of my mind, I thought at some point I would Form1/SBR it to add a legit stock and a vertical foregrip. I added a Holosun 403 in green, back up sights, rail section on the bottom of the handguard, and a Nightstrike Diamondback angled foregrip. It stayed in that configuration pretty much until January 2023. (at some point later in that time period I changed out the 403 for a Holosun 503 in green.)

January 31, 2023 the brace rule was published.....so I submitted my fee-waived Form 1 form to the ATF.....and waited.....and waited.

In February 2023 I saw a perfect sized cerakoted gray handguard and buffer tube on clearance. I swapped the originals for those gray parts and changed the grip to a gray Magpul K2+. (I'm a sucker for gray furniture on firearms - I love that look.)

In March, I had a LGS install a Franklin Armory binary trigger. (Free instal w/purchase)

May 31 - I got the ATF approval for SBR. I added a Mission First Minimalist stock and an A3 Tactical vertical foregrip - Notifying ATF of the Overall Length (OAL) change.

June 29th, 2023 - Removed the weight from the bolt carrier group, installed a Maxim Defense Roller Delayed (buffer) system, and switched out the original charging handle with a Radian Raptor (gray). I do have UTG backup sights and a 3 lug muzzle device (suppressor attachment) to add that are not in the latest pics.

This firearm's evolution is now complete. And in its final configuration has become anything but a "poor man's MP5." (Especially with the decreasing cost of AP5s and sale prices.)

While I love the final incarnation - based on things I have learned since purchasing this firearm - I would build vs buy a completed AR-9. I would probably start with the Aero EPC upper and lower as a base. Nothing wrong with the Angstadt Arms UDP-9 though. I'd still recommend that firearm if one does not want to build.

That’s one sexy bizznitch lol. I just got this the other day. All I have to do is drop my M&P 9 m2.0 metal in there and lock and load. Basically the same thing. Dope set up man

It will be here tomorrow. Then it’s off to the range to put it through the trials.
If you don't want to SBR it CAA has an adapter (easy to install) that takes he brace off & is set up to use a single point sling to provide a stabilization point in conjunction with using the two hands on the MCK/pistol.

It works fine & a lot cheaper than getting a tax stamp & engraving of the pistol.

Using that with the brace would stupidity transform it into an illegal SBR as soon as you pop your M&P into it FYI as of June 1st of this year. Not sure if you realized that or not.

FYI just to help and for him to weigh pros and cons. He wouldn't have to have the M&P pistol engraved unless he went the gun trust route in which case he would have to have the name of the trust engraved on the pistol. I wouldn't go the trust route in his particular his case.

Only trying to help....

The MCK adapter that I was talking about.

If he did go the SBR route, as per your first comment, he'd have to engrave the pistol with the stamp # since the MCK chassis isn't a firearm nor an NFA item.
