LOVED MY HARLEY!

IMG_0051.jpeg

My last bike setup for serious touring.
I don’t ride anymore.

I missed replying to your post. The sportster in your photos has got to be one of the best looking I've ever seen.
Thank you very much, kind of you! I'd had numerous Big Twins but a Ducati 900 gave me a lust for something a bit more nimble. I based it on my recollection of the Sporty's of my youth, the ~1969-1971 period that I had admired then. Also the "Then Came Bronson" period, if that rings a bell.
I bought a base 883 as a project bike for a retro build, but with "Oomph!" I looked for a less glitter-y gold than they used then and in L.A. you can see every color on the planet. This was the new-for-1995 Chrysler pale gold seen on so many soccer mom Grand Caravans from the period.

To all of the non Harley post here,
A quote from Talyn

"It's easy to start your own thread about it.

Title a new thread, re-post the pic with some history about it.

I'm sure others will chime in."

Hate to reveal my ignorance didn't know much about Ducatis. Recently I've been watching Moto GP races where Ducatis are very hard to beat. If I were 20-30 years younger think a Ducati would be a bike I would really enjoy. No, I'm not familiar with the Bronson period unless you're referring to the actor Bronson.

1969 TV action based around a wandering biker. Like the old "Route 66" TV show, but one guy, two wheels. Another likely unfamiliar cultural reference.
Ducati's are today almost all "V-twins", but at a 90 degree angle for better primary balance. They stunned the World Superbike series for many years and still doing well in MotoGP. I had one & it's what motivated me to build my Sportster.
A couple of minutes of "Bronson" for period flavor. Some of this was used as weekly intro..

I was in the military from 1964 to 1975 didn't get to watch much tv. If I didn't have medical issues would still be riding a Harley.

Finally found a couple pics of my last Sportster. 1200 Evo with lots of shiny stuff. Probably my all time favorite bike considering I didn't buy it until I was almost 70. Had plenty bigger, some faster, some smaller and lighter, but this was my favorite. It brought back some old memories since at 70 I could throw it around (about 560lbs) almost like I could a Glide or soft tail 30-40 years earlier.

Had a chopped sportster when I was young and stupid. Now I'm just old and numb. My only form of transportation of a few years. Dec-Mar. in Maine makes riding interesting. If ya keep enough "anti-freeze" in your blood ya don't notice the cold but dodging trees, parked cars, buildings, and stone walls is more of a challenge. But for the grace of God there go I. One day I just grew up. I miss the riding but not the lifestyle that went with it.

I started in college with a Triumph Bonneville. Dabbled in other makes of course...but the Nortons and Triumphs were my bread and butter. Thirty accident free years riding...but was riding less and less when I got married. That was 11 years ago...after a couple of years I gave my Harley to my older brother and bought the Cobra, since my wife likes convertibles but would not get on a bike for love nor money. A four wheeled motorcycle...and she goes with me. Worth it!

So these days this Cobra is my motorcycle...there is still a Triumph in front of it at this point, but it is gone now too. I finally grew up after, as I said before, 30 accident free years of riding. With all the people on cell phones these days, I am confident I could not start now and make it 30 years without a wreck. Which is sad.
