Mass Shooting in Maine

I'm old enough to remember the depredations of Charles "Texas Tower" Whitman at the University of Texas in 1966. He shot and killed 15 people (having already stabbed his mother and wife to death) and wounded 31 others. No "assault weapons" were involved, just common, garden-variety "hunting" rifles.

He'd have run up an even more horrible score if local armed citizens hadn't grabbed their own guns and kept him pinned down until the cops could show up and punch his final ticket.

I really get tired of these kinds of news stories and usually just briefly keep an eye out for when they are captured or killed. The reason being ... you can read different news stories after stories about how and why this happened ... and you'll still know no more than what you can guess happened for many reasons. But we all know you probably will never hear all the truth or correct facts.

What I do know and this tragic event again proves is that the police can't be everywhere and most likely won't be there when these tragedies unfold ... so it is up to the people to be prepared, as best you can, to defend yourself at all times. In this case there simply was no one armed to even try to stop him. I prefer to hear stories about those that have successfully defended themselves and others. Everyone being armed makes much sense than everyone being unarmed since it is impossible to eliminate every single gun, especially from the bad guys.

They can't control illegal gun possession from those with mental problems or keep illegal guns from criminals anymore than they can stop illegal drug trafficking that has been promised for decades.
Agree very much with all you said. Only one thing that still bothers me tremendously in this case: it seems like there was ZERO police response, ZERO! There was a shelter in place order 1h after he was done despite the multiple 911 calls! If you don't call that a failure, then what is?

Whitman had told a psychologist what he was going to do. He gave lots of signs but nobody did anything about him. At autopsy they found a brain tumor

1) i agree, and didn't watch every news channel or update

2) he bought the gun legally about 1 week before the shootings?

3) illegal events are going to happen, and they do, 24/7/65

4) where you live in PA, this news story most likely was only on your 6PM and 11PM news....

5) where i live, RIGHT HERE, in New England..??....it was on the news 24 hours a day, either radio, or tv, and even in print.

6) just like that escapee from YOUR state about what, 1 to 2 months ago? and everyone had to shelter in place..?? and it was most likely on YOUR local news all day long as well..??

when something is of this nature is going on in YOUR area, or anyone else's area, it's going to be broadcast till the end.

as an outsider.......it should be of no concern to anyone

Not unexpected given people were left to be shot at with no help... I certainly hope the nonsense "Gun Free Zones" think twice, but I'm sure they won't and double-down.

This wasn't a copycat, this was a dispute between thugs that got out of control. Listening to another news station there has been more information released about the incident and it appears a majority of the injured did not get hit by bullets but were wounded another way treated and released.
They stampeded and were injured in that stampede.

I could tell you a couple Ybor City stories. I have a buddy who tells me it's where the swanky old Cuban type restaurants and classy people are. I beg to differ. I lived in Tampa twice in the 80s. Once I lived near Nebraska and Sligh. From that corner I decided to walk to Kennedy Blvd, where all my buds hung out. I had bottles thrown at me and was generally harassed most of the way down. A long walk by the way. My only crime was being white. I just kept my pace, didn't run or anything. Anyway, Ybor City is a :poop: hole. In fact most of Tampa is a :poop: hole.

The Columbia restaurant in Ybor City was a favorite place for protocol to take visiting DV's. I spent many hours in and around Ybor on protection operations.

The notable history of the site was that it was where Teddy Roosevelt and his Rough Riders staged while awaiting sealift to Cuba. The Rough Riders were cavalry, but they could not get sealift for their horses. There were a lot of frustrated cowboys in that group.

And the BS continues, this time the heroic gun shop owner denied giving the silencer (sic) Card bought online because he failed the background check 🤣 🥲 It is journalists, so it's pure ignorance, making it sound like you go on Amazon, get yourself an "assault-style weapon silencer", couple days later it shows up and you pick it up as long as you pass a background check performed by the gun shop... Journalists are never bothered by facts, but the gun shop spewing this nonsense?!?!?! This is NYP, but the rest of the scum media is echoing this BS: https://nypost.com/2023/10/29/news/...p-due-to-mental-health-months-before-massacre

"Police across Maine were alerted just last month to the “veiled threats” by the U.S. Army reservist. Two local law enforcement chiefs told The Associated Press that a statewide awareness alert was sent in mid-September to be on the lookout for Card after he made threats against his base and fellow soldiers."

Ed Monk has an excellent Active Shooter training program. And while you can find both successes and failures by Police you really can’t blanket statement across the board. As Monk says it’s Time and Math

Here is an excellent PD ast with some great slide presentations but it’s good information just to listen to.

Let’s review medical confidentiality laws…..
Currently medical professionals can NOT share medical records on what is discussed with an individual who makes threats to use violence against others including the use of guns to shoot and kill multiple innocent people.

On the flip side many state attorney generals have petitioned for and obtained the medical records for women who visit a medical provider
“Sometimes out of the state they live in” to discuss the possible need to be allowed an abortion to protect their lives.

Talk about hypocritical bull 💩

As far as mental illness most states have an “Emergency Detention “ where if one meets certain criteria like this guy did they can be involuntary committed. It sounds like the shooter was however something fell through afterwards.

For example In Indiana a physician can order an “ED” when certain mental health or threats/criteria is met (self harm, making threats like this guy did) this guy in Maine was a textbook case. And the fact he was involuntarily committed like usual the mechanisms In place were not followed through afterwards and people were killed.

And now the anti gunners want to use it to springboard yet more laws!

Most states have mandatory reporting laws that require reporting by medical personnel of individuals who pose a threat to themselves or others, or of domestic violence, child abuse, child sexual abuse. Some states have some pretty harsh penalties for failure to report-in Florida it is a felony. These laws exist as a result of past failures that resulted in people being harmed. There are central hotlines for such reporting. The system breaks down when no action is taken. It is my contention that certain of these reports should go into NICS. As I have said here before, in almost every one of these mass killing cases there were warning signs, that were either unrecognized, or not taken seriously, or there was an ineffective response.
