Mileage Tax Proposal?

Leave it to a Democrat to tax mileage, next, they will tax the air you breath.......😬
I’m curious as to how they could monitor this.
I would just report I take public transportation to work. Prove to me you know I don’t.
That's not all. They will force you install GPS trackers to exactly track the mileage, separated on Interstate/surface streets maybe...
If you don't agree to GPS probably you'll either pay extra on taxes, or like a fine when driving without insurance/ car inspection.
As for public transportation... more power to you. In NTC maybe that works but in rest of US that's a joke. I looked into in my area and would take 3 hours to get to work (one way). It's 40-50 minutes away by car.

them.

Not sure what year it started but the computer in your vehicle is essentially a black box with many recorded details the consumer is unaware of. And don't forget that centralized system around your rear view mirror that allows you to call for road repair or directions. There is the capability to know every location that vehicle has been and when. And the milage driven? No secret. Imagine my astonishment when I discovered my 2020 Chevy pickup could actually be shut down, as in stopped, by a push of a button. Where that button is and who controls it I have yet to find out.

Liberty of conscience ( when people have consciences ) is rightly considered the most indispensable of liberties.

I live in Arlington, Texas whose greatest claim to fame is being the largest city in America without public transportation!

Likely don't need to force GPS on too many people?
GPS is already installed in most if not all newer vehicles at factory. Have a vehicle stolen, need for insurance discount or repoed purposes? It can be tracked if GPS source is still functional. Likely only need to allow some government agency to monitor vehicles GPS for mileage and location if don't already.

There is some very well thought out political strategy in this concept. The primary personal impact will hit rural residents (Republicans and Libertarians) much harder than it will hit city dwellers (Liberal Democrats). Punish those that vote against you and reward those that vote with you.

There are devices the government can mandate placement on vehicles that will track in real time and record travel that will also know exactly where your vehicle is any time any authorized agency wants to know. The milage tax gives them a good government reason to require such devices. This also gives companies huge new profit streams with which to fund political campaigns for those voting them those opportunities.

In some cities they're okay or were years ago. Most public transportation is a sad expensive joke or terrible lesson in humility especially out in the country. Worse than trip on SS Minnow of Gilligan's Island fame. They tread on insanity.

Is already here.
Between vehicles and cell phone GPS, land based cameras and satellite imagery you're never really alone. Sound crazy?

There's imagery cameras that look through walls, not just heat signatures with thermography, but basically make walls disappear like they're invisible in 3D. Were invented by University of Michigan not too long ago. In some ways, the older I get the less I like advances in new tech. Can be scary stuff in anyone's hands

Satellite imagery can now detect underground objects as well. Is why there's so many recent discoveries of ancient buildings, structures and other things that are being discovered recently.

Thank goodness I'm retired, and even when I was working my job was only 6 miles away. How many of you are still in the workforce and have to drive a distance to get to your job? Vacations driving cross-country? Visiting relatives out of state? Don't we already pay a tax at the gas pump?

California, some years ago, had a campaign to update the civilian and public transportation fleet in order to clean up the air and use fewer resources. They were very successful and after about ten years, the tax revenues from gasoline sales began dropping rapidly. The State couldn't stand that loss and then jacked up the fuel taxes.
Then there was a push for electric cars.
Now, legislators are pushing an electric vehicle licensing premium tax because they figured out electric cars don't use gas.
My point is: Tax collection is the primary function of the government.

GM had that power the second you activated their On-Star. Or... maybe before that?
However, see this:

Whenever my dad had to use the air hose at a gas station, he'd almost always make the statement, "Next thing ya know they'll be charging you for this air."

Well, as we all know...the air machine isn't free anymore at most locations.

Note: There is one location where I live where the air hose use is still free, but they pump your gas, and (last I heard) still clean your windshield when you fill-up.

In a lot of states if you buy gas at the station you can ask them to turn on the air pump and they gladly will.
Also yes most if not all newer vehicles have GPS however they are not active all the time. GM OnStar would ask you if it was ok to turn that feature on if you called them for assistance however the vehicle itself could turn it on in the event the system recognized that you were in an accident. My 17 F250 has the same feature but only accident related. I’m guessing adding a GPS or using the already installed GPS to track your travel or mileage would be viewed as a gross invasion of privacy and won’t pass.
