Mileage Tax Proposal?

Not sure what year it started but the computer in your vehicle is essentially a black box with many recorded details the consumer is unaware of. And don't forget that centralized system around your rear view mirror that allows you to call for road repair or directions. There is the capability to know every location that vehicle has been and when. And the milage driven? No secret. Imagine my astonishment when I discovered my 2020 Chevy pickup could actually be shut down, as in stopped, by a push of a button. Where that button is and who controls it I have yet to find out.

Liberty of conscience ( when people have consciences ) is rightly considered the most indispensable of liberties.

I have been warning people about this for a couple years. They do not need to mandate no travel, all they have to do is turn off everyone's cars.
I think what ever they are planning, they will try in about 25-50 years, at that time you will have a population who can not travel unless they allow it. Who can't fix their own cars. Who can't grow or can food. Who can't hunt or fish. Who can't do much of anything with out google. They will be pretty easy to make comply because they will be totally dependent.
I have gone the opposite direction. Big tech wants to censor me? Fine I do not need them. I got rid of my cell phone too. Remember how they used to hand them out for free? How they would even pay the bill for poor people so everyone could and would have a cellphone? Now they want $800 for a phone? For some reason they wanted everyone to have a cell phone so badly they were giving them away. That should tell you something right there. I lived a long time without a cell phone (how many people can say that? Kids have them by the time they are 8-10 years old now. I am sure I will be fine without one.
I saved $133 a month by switching off my cellphone. Lol. (Counting the cost of a new phone every couple of years)

"For some reason they wanted everyone to have a cell phone so badly they were giving them away."

My best guess is they gave the (obamaphones) away (at taxpayers expense) to get votes. The old "I gave you something, now you owe me", and it was for votes.

Or it was like a crack head and dealer arrangement. Get them hooked and then make them pay.
The other thing is you used to be able to turn off all locating and remove the battery, you can't now.
Not to mention almost all apps make you agree that they can turn on your mic and camera anytime they want.
(BTW I never got an Obama phone, but they used to have you sign a two year contract and you could get a new phone for little to nothing. So every two years when your phone was starting to die all you had to do was sign another two year contract.) My wife is talking about getting rid of her phone too. If she does, we will save $3000 a year. That is a chunk for a nice vacation or a lot of ammo or for whatever. At 25% taxes $3000 after taxes is what $5000 you have to earn before taxes to pay that $3000??

Already too late..........we are all in an electronic prison.

Stone walls do not a prison make,
Nor iron bars a cage,
Minds innocent and quiet take
That for an hermitage.

California, some years ago, had a campaign to update the civilian and public transportation fleet in order to clean up the air and use fewer resources. They were very successful and after about ten years, the tax revenues from gasoline sales began dropping rapidly. The State couldn't stand that loss and then jacked up the fuel taxes.
Then there was a push for electric cars.
Now, legislators are pushing an electric vehicle licensing premium tax because they figured out electric cars don't use gas.
My point is: Tax collection is the primary function of the government.
Most governments are worse than kids with parents credit card in an electronics or candy store? Encouragement is mostly non existent? Am thinking half the requirement for government service is to be dyslexic or inexperienced sometimes?

Budget, spending within your means? - Oh. that's for someone else! So much for any future plans?
If do manage to save anything up, government's usually there with hand out to tax interest or savings?

On cell phones there are less expensive off mainstream options.
They use unused airwave space from major companies.
$50. phones/$25 mo. refill cards with no commitment.
With unlimited phone and internet. Can use cash pmts.
Had one for over 2 years, no probs. Is $350. yearly.

Hyperbole

Say goodbye to Uber and Lyft if they ever do this... No way these ride service companies would be able to exist if this came to fruition. The trucking industry would be hit super hard as well. That would lead to tremendous inflation in the price of goods. Especially at the grocery store. Once again, hitting the middle and lower classes the hardest...

Don't forget about agriculture's tractors/equipment's fuel?
Is not always so cut and dry though. Not everything is upfront.
There are federal subsidies for some sectors as well as write off's for business expenses.
Not so much for all public sectors. If do it right, fuel is a write off, but still need to pay for fuel upfront.

Think how much postage stamps will increase. They gotta cover those fuel costs somehow, and all the companies that "free" shipping (which we know isn't really free) on their ord'd products? That "incentive" would probably cease to exist.

Hyperbole
Lol.
What part is exaggerated? They can already shut off millions and millions of cars with the push of a button and that number goes up with each passing year.
If you know anyone under 35, they will all tell you that all you have to do to fix your car, put a trigger in a gun, tile your bathroom or even find your way from point A to point B is google or youtube it. Never mind that they actually do not know anything, but rather they simply did the same thing as follow directions on the back of the box. They do not need to understand nor use critical thinking, they simply follow step by step.
You can youtube how to put an alternator in your car and not even know what an alternator does.
Now, the easiest way to force someone to comply is to make them dependent. I do not think that needs anymore explanation.

I thought about looking into that. But idk, I am still on the high of cutting the cord. It feels freeing for some reason.

On pay as you go cell phones? There are several companies and options to each.

One a advantage is no commitment
. And, phone is yours to keep, trash or give away.
(Refill cards are similar to lottery tickets with scratch off boxes revealing code underneath.)
Pay one month at a time. Don't want phone service one month, simply don't refill services.
Want service next mo. or inbetween? Simply pay for card & refill to activate service.
Can also add multiple refill cards/services in "reserve" to apply for future.
*Keep an unused card in wallet or purse or elsewhere for emergency use too?

Plus, phone is still good for 911 service & is still totally usable when near & connect to a WiFi hot spot. Even phone is usable with an appropriate & free downloadable app. Learned from kids, go figure?

Another simular option is to obtain one of those "little black boxes" & connect to a home phone.
Uses conventional phone number & is considered one. The black box acts like a cell phone connected to a land line phone. Black box is/was around $50. & service is around $10.-$15 mo. Am not sure of commitment, but don't remember there being one. One huge advantage is IF wanted, can take whole set up from place to place while keeping same number as long as connected to average US households 110VAC power supply.

The above mentioned products are usually available at usual stores like Walmart, Target, some drugstores and likely elsewhere. Hope that helps you out?

The politicians considering this proposal know that it will hit surburbanites and rural residents harder than city dwellers. I'm not sure they are fully accounting for the affects of COVID. Many businesses in my area adjusted to a Zoom/Work From Home business strategy. Businesses that were renting entire floors of office buildings downsized to keep a small corporate office with a receptionist and several meeting rooms, while using a primarily remote workforce. Many employers realized that employees were more efficient when they weren't commuting an hour each way, and several of my friends have already been told that they will remain remote even though the state has opened for business.

I'm not sure the politician's that love their big blue cities realize how many companies will continue this trend if taxes like this one are passed. It may wind up decimating an already crippled city tax base. This plan is ill-advised, and I strongly doubt that it will work out the way its supporters intend.

Far too many lack enough foresight before implementation.
Maybe why we have so much muck in the "swamp"?

It is likely, if the current administration has its way, there will be very few gasoline powered vehicles by mid-century. My 2002 Ford Ranger won't be running on a regular basis much past 2030. Around that date electric cars will start becoming the norm. One way to phase out in the gasoline engine in to radically increase the price of gas. The average person won't be able to afford to drive a car that runs on gas. Those that control the production of electricity will rule the world.
