Springfield Armory 1911DS Prodigy FF issues

Super bummed and wish I had found this before buying the 1911 Prodigy. Cleaned it and went to the range only to find it doesn't load. Took it apart then did another thorough cleaning just to have the same issue. I will clean and try the other magazine but it's very frustrating to spend $1600 for a gun you can't depend on. I guess it's going back on Tuesday and I hope that money is not lost. This seems to be a well known issue, I don't understand why they don't fix it.
Send it back to Springfield, but call them, don’t do email, most gun shops don’t take back guns, none in my area do, Springfield will correct it and it costs you nothing, they pay shipping both ways.

Thank you! My gun shop is awesome and will definitely work with them to get it fixed, just sad that such an expensive gun has so many issues. I wish I had invested that money in a new carbine instead.

Money isn't lost brother. Send it back. They'll fix it.

Update, was able to get it to fire but it would still only fire about 3 before it would jam again, it's also not expelling spent cases consistently which causes additional jamming. My gun shop was great and was able to send it back. Let's hope they can make it work properly. Stay tuned!
SA hs a petty standard list of things they do when a Prodigy comes back. They’ll probably replace the disconnector, ream the chamber, and likely replace the extractor and spring. You’ll be good to go when it comes back.

@scherreik, Springfield will go above and beyond to make it right for you. My original Prodigy 5" had several reoccurring issues. The 5 digit serial # was NMH374--. It was replaced at SA's discretion with a brand new Prodigy 5" COMP model serial # 81---. This thing runs! The optic plate loosens up from slide on occasion, but I will see what I can do to fix that myself. Do not want to look a "gift horse" in the mouth. I am very impressed with SA customer service and am sure you will be taken care of.

My Prodigy 4.25 developed hammer-follow at around 400 rounds. Springfield paid shipping and I have nearly 100 rounds through it since. It hasn't had a single issue since with a wide variety of ammo. It is, by far, my favorite gun to shoot. The Prodigy was my first Springfield but it won't be my last. They stand behind their products and care for customers without red tape. The gun will be a favorite once it is fixed.

Unfortunately it's not getting better. I picked up my "replacement" prodigy today. I was told they were replacing it in lieu of fixing the original one. As I'm cleaning it I notice that it's filthy, not shipping grease filthy, been fired a lot and never cleaned filthy. So I clean it and oil it, then as I'm putting it back together the slide keeps sticking. If it's sticking when I'm handling it will stick if I try to fire it. I guess I'm going back to the shop again tomorrow to see if SA will just give me my money back, they haven't provided a working firearm and clearly don't intend to. What a waste of time and money.

Wow, I highly doubt they will give you your money back, all my shops have posted No Returns, you should try to see if it shoots.

Is it sticking on the disconnector? Can you pull
The slide partially back and get it to stick there?

I’ve not heard of SA replacing with a new gun, but bottom line I’d call them and ask what’s going on.

It has a lifetime guarantee so I guess we'll just keep sending it back and forth in perpetuity until either I get one that works or, they just tell me to take a hike. I honestly don't know what else to do, it's a good chunk of change to just call a loss.
hmm. Well I was thinking about getting a Prodigy, but now, I will wait and see. Meanwhile there are other makes/models on my list to take a look at.
Based on my experience I would not recommend it unless you want to spend a ton of money to try and learn to be a gunsmith on the fly lol.

Yes, if it’s sticking on the disconnector, replace recoil spring with at least a 12lb one
It's not sticking on the disconnector, it's sticking in multiple places along the rail, it's very weird. I'm taking it to the shop today and see what they think. The issue is they won't really touch it because it could void the lifetime warranty, but when I send it back they give me another non-functional firearm.

Follow-up question, if they'll let me switch out for another SA firearm do you have any suggestions or something that would be quality/dependable in a handgun or rifle? I was looking at the Saint AR-9, I don't love that it's direct blowback though. I just worry that they have quality issues across the board. Thanks!

so first of all, SA does make many fine firearms. You should take a look around, based on needs and budget of course, yet I would look at their rifles - all of them are well regarded. I've heard good things about the 1911 pistol family as well. Best of luck and btw everyone gets a difficult system once in a while - all manufacturers occasionally make one.
