The name "Gulf of Mexico" was first coined by Jesuit priests in the early 1600's so it became known as such.

But the USA has a greater coast-line with the "Gulf" than Mexico does.

Other countries have their own local names besides what's commonly used on maps.

Mexico recognizes two other names for the "Gulf of California", the "Sea of Cortez" and the "Vermillion Sea", so if the USA wants to call our portion of the "Gulf" the Gulf of America then IMO that's fine.

In my region the American Indian tribes have their own "unpronounceable names" for certain landmarks, other than commonly known names so some signs have both on them.
As in if you are standing at the Port of Dammam it's the Arabian Gulf. If you are located in Bushehr Iran, it's the Persian Gulf. So why shouldn't it be the Gulf of America from our perspective?

There's a scene in Rio Grande in which John Wayne meets his Mexican counter part in the middle of the river.

The Mexican Commander refers to the river as the Rio Bravo and John Wayne calls it the Rio Grande.

My wife grew up in El Paso so as I'm reading this discussion I asked her "What do the Mexicans in El Paso call the Rio Grande?"

She said "They call it the same thing everybody else calls it, the river."

I fished all over the Gulf for many years. It was always "The Gulf" in our lexicon
