There are still
millions of older 40 cal handguns in circulation. 9mm, 22lr, 45acp, 380acp, 38 special and 357 mag are probably the only handgun calibers out of all the handgun calibers that ever existed that have more firearms in circulation. 40S&W is still a relatively popular round, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon.
These are the top Calibers according to AmmoSeek. .40S&W is in 7th place not too far behind .38 special and 10mm. There are more ammo options for 40S&W than there is for 10mm and 380acp.
